OSHA Safety Railings & Fall Protection Fabrication Caldwell Idaho

By Redband Fabrication
OSHA-compliant safety railing system fabricated by Redband Fabrication for an industrial warehouse facility

We fabricate OSHA-compliant safety railings, guardrails, and fall protection systems for industrial facilities across the Treasure Valley. Every system we build is engineered to pass inspection on the first visit — not patched together after a violation shows up. If you've got elevated platforms, mezzanines, loading docks, or catwalks that need guardrails, we build them to spec and deliver them ready to install.

Why "Close Enough" Guardrails Fail

We've seen it plenty of times: a welding shop builds a "railing" that looks right but doesn't meet the specific dimensional and load requirements OSHA mandates. Then the inspector shows up, measures the top rail at 39 inches, finds no toe board, and hands you a citation. In 2026, that's $16,131 per serious violation — and willful violations run up to $161,323. A properly fabricated guardrail system costs a fraction of one citation.

  • Serious Violation: $16,131 average penalty per instance
  • Willful Violation: Up to $161,323 per violation
  • Our guardrail cost: A fraction of a single citation — contact us for a quote

What OSHA Actually Requires (And What We Build)

The dimensional requirements under 1910.23 are precise, and we hold to them on every job:

  • Top rail height: 42 inches ±0.5 inch from the walking surface — we target exact 42
  • Mid-rail: 21 inches, at the exact midpoint between the walking surface and top rail
  • Toe board: 4 inches minimum, continuous along the entire platform edge
  • Post spacing: 6–8 foot centers depending on load requirements
  • Post material: 2\" × 2\" × 1/4\" HSS is our standard — heavier sections available for high-load applications

Load Ratings We Exceed

OSHA sets minimums. We build above them:

  • Top rail (concentrated): 250 lb at any point — OSHA minimum is 200 lb
  • Top rail (linear): 25 lb/ft along the rail — OSHA minimum is 20 lb/ft
  • Mid-rail: 200 lb at any point — OSHA minimum is 150 lb
  • Toe board: 65 lb/ft horizontal — OSHA minimum is 50 lb/ft

Elevated Platforms and Mezzanine Guardrail Systems

We don't just build standalone guardrails — we design elevated work platforms with integrated fall protection from the ground up. That means guardrails, toe boards, stair access, and self-closing gates are all part of the same fabrication package:

  • Warehouse mezzanines: 125–250 PSF live load, full guardrail + toe board system on all open sides
  • Equipment access platforms: 50–100 PSF, 3-sided guardrail with access clearance for machinery loading
  • Catwalk systems: 50 PSF, full guardrail both sides for over-pipe and conveyor crossings
  • Loading dock platforms: 250 PSF (forklift rated), swing gates and removable guardrail sections included

Ladder Safety Cages (OSHA 1910.23(d))

For fixed ladders exceeding 24 feet in general industry, OSHA requires safety cages. We fabricate them to spec:

  • Cage start: 7 feet from the bottom landing
  • Cage extension: 42 inches above the top landing
  • Inside diameter: 28 inches (exceeds the 27-inch minimum)
  • Spreader bars: at entry point and every 3 feet of climb (exceeds 4-foot maximum spacing)

What You Get With Every Order

Documentation matters as much as the steel when it comes to OSHA audits. Every guardrail system we ship includes:

  • As-built drawing: Final dimensions and materials certified to 1910.23 / 1926.502
  • Load calculation sheet: Engineering proof of compliance at 250+ lb concentrated load
  • Material certs: Mill certificates for all steel, coating specifications on file
  • Inspection checklist: Annual inspection template so your safety team can track condition
  • Compliance tag: Welded stainless tag with fabrication date and specification reference

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

What are OSHA guardrail height requirements?

A.

We build every guardrail to 42 inches (±0.5 inch) from the walking surface — that's the exact spec under OSHA 1910.23 for general industry and 1926.502 for construction. A mid-rail at 21 inches and a continuous 4-inch toe board go on every system. We don't build to "approximately 42" — we build to 42, because that's what passes audits.

Q.

How much do OSHA-compliant guardrails cost per linear foot?

A.

Cost depends on finish (painted vs. galvanized), post spacing, and whether you need a toe board. Hot-dip galvanized costs more upfront but gives you 20–50 years of corrosion protection versus 1–3 years for paint. On most industrial jobs, the lifecycle math favors galvanized. Contact us for a quote on your specific layout.

Q.

What is the OSHA fine for missing or non-compliant guardrails?

A.

In 2026, OSHA serious violations for guardrail non-compliance average $16,131 per instance, and willful violations run up to $161,323. A fully fabricated and installed guardrail system costs a fraction of a single citation. We've had customers call us after getting hit with a violation — it's always cheaper to build it right the first time.

Q.

Do you fabricate safety cages for fixed ladders?

A.

Yes. We build OSHA 1910.23(d) compliant safety cages for fixed ladders exceeding 24 feet. The cage starts 7 feet from the bottom, extends 42 inches above the top landing, and maintains a 28-inch inside diameter. We build them in our Caldwell shop and deliver ready to install — bolt-on or weld-on attachment, your choice.
